Indigent Burial and Funeral Fund
The Indigent Burial and Funeral Fund was created in 2007 by the City of St. Louis Circuit Court. The Fund assists with the financial cost of burial and funeral costs of indigent persons in the following Missouri counties: Adair, Andrew, Atchison, Boone, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Cass, Chariton, Clay, Clinton, Cole, Cooper, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Howard, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Mercer, Moniteau, Nodaway, Pettis, Platte, Putnam, Randolph, Ray, Saline, Schuyler, Sullivan, and Worth.
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation manages the Indigent Burial and Funeral Fund, which reimburses county governments to help cover the cost of burials of individuals who are not survived by any known family members (i.e., there is no one to cover the cost of the body and the remains will not be released to the family). The Fund does not reimburse funeral homes or families.
The Indigent Burial and Funeral Fund may reimburse up to $750 of the overall burial costs to counties. There is no limit to the number of requests submitted or the total amount of assistance a county may receive. The turnaround time from request to reimbursement is approximately three weeks. Reimbursement is sent via check to the requesting county entity.
