Research Charities
Resources to help you make informed giving decisions
You can use a variety of tools to research nonprofit organizations and causes in the Greater Kansas City area and beyond. Because no single source can provide a complete picture of an organization’s effectiveness, we encourage donors to use multiple resources and connect directly with nonprofits they are considering supporting.
In addition to exploring an organization’s website and social media channels, and reviewing its newsletters and other communications, you may find these resources helpful:
- BBB Wise Giving Alliance (Give.org)
Reviews charities in accordance with the Better Business Bureau Standards for Charity Accountability. - Candid (GuideStar)
Offers information on nonprofit organizations, such as their mission, programs, financials, staff, and more. - Charity Navigator
Evaluates nonprofits using ratings and insights focused on financial health, accountability and impact. - Giving Compass
Explores an organization’s mission, impact, financial information, and recent updates. - IRS Business Master File
Includes the IRS database of tax-exempt organizations to verify a charity’s tax status and basic organizational information. - ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer
Provides IRS Form 990 filings and financial information for tax-exempt organizations.
Information on third-party research platforms is often compiled from multiple sources and is not always directly managed by the nonprofit. Some content may require a subscription to access.
