Granting to International Charities

Greater Kansas City Community Foundation donors can use their donor-advised funds to support charities around the world. Many donors work with our team to identify U.S.-based charities that can receive funds on behalf of international charities.

If that option is not available, donors can grant directly to international charities as long as their grants comply with all laws pertaining to grants made outside of the U.S., including IRS rules and the Patriot Act.

Information to Know

The Community Foundation has partnered with global giving expert Paragon Philanthropy to ensure proper due diligence and record keeping for our donors’ international grants. The Community Foundation will work directly with Paragon Philanthropy to handle all of the administrative responsibilities. This includes screening international charities to ensure they:

  • Are not subject to U.S. or U.N. sanctions and are not included in certain terrorist, trade control or fraud lists.
  • Meet the same requirements as a 501(c)(3) public charity under U.S. tax law for use of the granted funds.
  • Can show the capacity to carry out the purpose of the donation.

Because of the extensive due diligence process, international grants require additional fees and may take a minimum of six to eight weeks to complete. We find the grant process can move quicker when the donor and the charity are already connected, so we recommend reaching out to the charity to let them know that they will be hearing from our team.
