The federal government shutdown has created a ripple effect across the country, causing disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which 42 million people rely on for food assistance every month. In Kansas and Missouri, 840,000 people rely on SNAP to provide food for themselves and their families. Thankfully, many local nonprofits provide food access in our region and are helping to bridge the gap during the uncertainty.
If you would like to donate food or money, here are a few resources to help you identify organizations and nonprofit partners that facilitate meal assistance.
In the Kansas City Region:
Harvesters Food Locator
Search and find Harvesters’ partner agencies. Harvesters is a regional food bank serving a 27-county area of northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas.
Kanbe’s Markets Hunger Relief Partner Network
Search and find Kanbe’s community food assistance partners.
The United Way of Greater Kansas City – SNAP into Action
Information on the United Way of Greater Kansas City’s efforts to provide meals to our community.
Nationally:
Feeding America
Search a national database of food banks.
We encourage all donors to reach out to food access charities to see how you can help organizations most effectively.
If you have a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation, you can email our team of philanthropic advisors at info@growyourgiving.org if you need assistance identifying organizations that support food access in our region.
